Published 2002-12-16Version 1

We prove that if f is a self-map of an algebraic variety over a field K, then under certain conditions on X, f and K the set of possible periods of K-valued periodic points of f is finite.

Comments: We correct a wrong remark in the published version of this paper by showing how the results of that paper can be extended to certain birational maps
