Non-equilibrium thermodynamics of charge separation in organic solar cells

Waldemar Kaiser, Alessio Gagliardi

Published 2019-05-18Version 1

This work presents the first theoretical description of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of charge separation in organic solar cells. Based on the concept of stochastic thermodynamics, we connect the kinetics of charge transport with the thermodynamic properties to address the nonequilibrium nature of charge separation. The impacts of disorder, permittivity, and electric field on the free energy difference are investigated as showcases, to demonstrate the capability of the developed method.
