We study the THz-driven spin dynamics of thin CoPt films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy using the femtosecond magneto-optical Kerr effect in polar geometry. With a peak THz electric field of approximately 300 kV/cm (peak magnetic field 0.1 T) we observe a demagnetization amplitude of the order of 1%, more than one order of magnitude larger than the demagnetization observed in samples with easy-plane anisotropy irradiated with the same field strength. We also predict that full magnetization reversal via an ultrafast precessional, or ballistic, mechanism caused by THz radiation can be realized using the magnetic field enhancement in metamaterial structures. We design one such structure using finite elements simulations, and obtain a greater than 10-fold enhancement of the THz magnetic field over an area of several tens square micrometers. When used in combination with the THz field produced by present laser-based THz sources, we show that local magnetic fields exceeding 1 T can be produced. These fields have been shown to be sufficiently large to observe ballistic switching using relativistic electrons produced at linear accelerators, and are expected to lead to the first demonstration of table-top THz-induced magnetization reversal.
