Dynamics of Distal Actions on Certain Compact Spaces

We show that for a linear transformation T of a Euclidean space with determinant one, the following are equivalent: (1) T generates a compact group in special linear group, (2) the corresponding action on the unit sphere is distal, and (3) the corresponding action on the real projective space is distal. We also discuss the distally of `affine' actions on n-sphere, for different rotations, and also on the p-adic unit sphere.
