On conjugacy classes in the Lie group E_8

This is based on a talk given at the AMS/RMS joint meeting in June 2013, Alba Iulia. The main theme is that the conjugacy classes in the Lie group E_8 should be (roughly) parametrized by conjugacy classes in the corresponding Weyl group.
