By minimizing the energy under a mass-Casimir constraint we construct a large class of isotropic, spherically symmetric steady states and prove their nonlinear stability against general, i. e., not necessarily symmetric perturbations. The class is optimal in a certain sense, in particular, it includes all polytropes of finite mass with decreasing dependence on the particle energy.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v2", "updated": "2002-09-03T13:24:33.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "85A05", "35B35" ], "keywords": [ "isotropic steady states", "galactic dynamics", "nonlinear stability", "spherically symmetric steady states", "stellar dynamics case" ], "tags": [ "journal article" ], "publication": { "publisher": "Springer", "journal": "Communications in Mathematical Physics", "year": 2001, "volume": 219, "number": 3, "pages": 607 }, "note": { "typesetting": "LaTeX", "pages": 31, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2001CMaPh.219..607G" } } }
