We accumulate the magnetization (energy) paths into time-dependent distributions from which we reconstruct the free energy as a function of the magnetic field, temperature and system size. From the reconstructed free energy, we obtain the free energy barrier that is associated with the transition from a metastable state to the stable equilibrium state. Although mean-field theory predicts a sharp transition between the metastable and the unstable region where the free energy barrier is zero, the results for the nearest-neighbour Ising model show that the free energy barrier does not go zero.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v1", "updated": "2003-11-12T13:31:29.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "05.70.Ce", "05.50.+q", "05.70.Fh" ], "keywords": [ "free energy barrier", "metastable region", "path ensemble", "reconstruction", "mean-field theory predicts" ], "publication": { "doi": "10.1063/1.1778372", "journal": "Journal of Chemical Physics", "year": 2004, "month": "Sep", "volume": 121, "number": 10, "pages": 4804 }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 0, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2004JChPh.121.4804B" } } }
