As is well known, the entropy density of a two-dimensional configuration can be efficiently and accurately estimated via a converging sequence of conditional entropies. We show that the manner in which these conditional entropies converge to their asymptotic value serves as a measure of global correlation and structure for spatial systems in any dimension. We compare and contrast entropy-convergence with mutual-information and structure-factor techniques for quantifying and detecting spatial structure.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v1", "updated": "2002-12-04T01:32:50.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "05.20.-y", "05.45.-a", "65.40.Gr", "89.75.Kd" ], "keywords": [ "excess entropy", "two-dimensional patterns", "entropy convergence", "structural information", "spatial structure" ], "tags": [ "journal article" ], "publication": { "publisher": "APS", "journal": "Physical Review E", "year": 2003, "month": "May", "volume": 67, "number": 5, "pages": "051104" }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 11, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2003PhRvE..67e1104F" } } }
