First we consider optimal control problems for ordinary differential equations and show loss of accuracy for Adams-Moulton and Adams-Bashford methods, whereas BDF methods preserve high--order accuracy. Subsequently we extend these results to semi--lagrangian discretizations of hyperbolic relaxation systems.
