A general result applicable to arbitrary geometries is obtained through the use of Ford, Lewis, & O'Connell's remarkable formula. Additionally, we address the possibility for obtaining the Casimir energy as a sum over complex \"modes\". We show in this case that the standard sum-over-modes formula must be suitably generalized to avert unphysical complex energies. Finally, we apply our results to several standard examples.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v2", "updated": "2012-11-14T17:06:46.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "31.30.jh", "12.20.-m", "71.10.-w", "03.70.+k" ], "keywords": [ "casimir effect", "dissipative systems", "casimir free energy", "standard sum-over-modes formula", "avert unphysical complex energies" ], "tags": [ "journal article" ], "publication": { "publisher": "APS", "journal": "Physical Review A", "year": 2012, "month": "Dec", "volume": 86, "number": 6, "pages": "062517" }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 20, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2012PhRvA..86f2517I" } } }
