This exotic quantum phenomenon is only observed very recently in traped ions and cold atom systems, but still a challenging task for electron systems. Here we present a general theory about the electron Zitterbewegung in a topological insulator in the presence of an in-plane electric field. We demonstrate theoretically that the topological edge states in topological insulators origin from electron Zitterbewegung and the quantum spin Hall effect and quantum anomalous Hall effect can be viewed as a manifestation of anomalous electron Zitterbewegung.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v4", "updated": "2011-09-27T02:13:50.000Z", "journal": null, "doi": null }, { "version": "v5", "updated": "2014-10-14T10:29:38.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "71.70.Ej", "72.25.Mk", "75.76.+j" ], "keywords": [ "topological insulator", "probing electron zitterbewegung", "quantum spin hall effect", "exotic quantum phenomenon", "cold atom systems" ], "publication": { "doi": "10.1103/PhysRevB.87.161115", "journal": "Physical Review B", "year": 2013, "month": "Apr", "volume": 87, "number": 16, "pages": 161115 }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 4, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2013PhRvB..87p1115S" } } }
