We find a minimax characterization of commuting times, and from this we get monotonicity of commuting times with respect to equilibrium transition rates. All of these results are familiar in the case of time-reversible chains, where techniques of classical electrical theory apply. In presenting these results, we take the opportunity to develop Markov chain theory in a `conformally correct' way", "revisions": [ { "version": "v1", "updated": "2011-07-13T17:36:17.000Z", "comment": "Version dated 5 March 2008", "journal": null, "doi": null }, { "version": "v2", "updated": "2017-10-25T18:17:29.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "60J10" ], "keywords": [ "ergodic markov chain", "commuting time geometry", "equilibrium transition rates", "markov chain theory", "euclidean space" ], "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 0, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2011arXiv1107.2612D" } } }
