The Majorana fermions associated with these modes have non-Abelian exchange statistics, despite the fact that the braid group is trivial in three dimensions. This can occur because the defects are associated with an orientation that can undergo topologically nontrivial rotations. A new feature of three dimensional systems is that there are \"braidless\" operations in which it is possible to manipulate the groundstate associated with a set of defects without moving or measuring them. To illustrate these effects we analyze specific architectures involving topological insulators and superconductors.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v2", "updated": "2010-01-28T02:55:35.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "03.67.Lx", "74.45.+c", "71.10.Pm", "74.90.+n" ], "keywords": [ "majorana fermions", "non-abelian statistics", "dimensions", "undergo topologically nontrivial rotations", "non-abelian exchange statistics" ], "tags": [ "journal article" ], "publication": { "publisher": "APS", "journal": "Physical Review Letters", "doi": "10.1103/PhysRevLett.104.046401", "year": 2010, "month": "Jan", "volume": 104, "number": 4, "pages": "046401" }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 4, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "inspire": 832223, "adsabs": "2010PhRvL.104d6401T" } } }
