The merging signals a topological transition between a semi-metallic phase and a band insulator. We derive a universal Hamiltonian that describes the physical properties of the transition, which is controlled by a single parameter, and analyze the Landau-level spectrum in its vicinity. This merging may be observed in the organic salt alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2 I_3 or in an optical lattice of cold atoms simulating deformed graphene.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v2", "updated": "2009-10-30T15:00:53.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "73.61.Wp", "73.61.Ph", "73.43.-f" ], "keywords": [ "two-dimensional crystal", "dirac points", "cold atoms simulating deformed graphene", "electronic spectrum", "organic salt" ], "tags": [ "journal article" ], "publication": { "publisher": "APS", "journal": "Physical Review B", "year": 2009, "month": "Oct", "volume": 80, "number": 15, "pages": 153412 }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 4, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2009PhRvB..80o3412M" } } }
