We present here results showing that the mathematics of string theory is capable of describing such fermionic quantum critical states. Using the Anti-de-Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence to relate fermionic quantum critical fields to a gravitational problem, we compute the spectral functions of fermions in the field theory. By increasing the fermion density away from the relativistic quantum critical point, a state emerges with all the features of the Fermi-liquid.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v2", "updated": "2009-12-24T14:33:17.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "keywords": [ "string theory", "emergent fermi-liquid", "zero temperature quantum phase transition", "field theory", "relate fermionic quantum critical fields" ], "tags": [ "journal article", "famous paper" ], "publication": { "journal": "Science", "year": 2009, "month": "Jul", "volume": 325, "number": 5939, "pages": 439 }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 22, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "inspire": 817866, "adsabs": "2009Sci...325..439C" } } }
