Investigating the order-disorder transition for Ising spins on modular random networks, corresponding to consensus formation in society, we observe two distinct phases: (i) ordering within each module at a critical temperature, followed by (ii) global ordering at a lower temperature. This indicates polarization of society into groups having contrary opinions can persist indefinitely even when mutual interactions between agents favor consensus.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v2", "updated": "2009-08-08T21:34:19.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "89.75.Hc", "05.50.+q", "75.10.Hk", "87.23.Ge" ], "keywords": [ "modular networks analogous", "ising spins", "social polarization", "agents favor consensus", "modular random networks" ], "tags": [ "journal article" ], "publication": { "publisher": "APS", "journal": "Physical Review E", "year": 2009, "month": "Aug", "volume": 80, "number": 2, "pages": "025101" }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 4, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2009PhRvE..80b5101D" } } }
