These instabilities are mainly damped by the viscosity of the star or by the existence of a strong magnetic field. A fraction of the observed millisecond pulsars are known to be inside Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), systems in which a neutron star (or a black hole) is accreting from a donor whose mass is smaller than 1 $M_\\odot$. Here we show that the r-mode instabilities can generate strong toroidal magnetic fields by inducing differential rotation. In this way we also provide an alternative scenario for the origin of the magnetars.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v2", "updated": "2009-03-13T17:44:43.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "keywords": [ "accreting millisecond pulsars", "generate strong toroidal magnetic fields", "inside low mass x-ray binaries" ], "tags": [ "conference paper", "journal article" ], "publication": { "doi": "10.1088/1742-6596/168/1/012008", "journal": "Journal of Physics Conference Series", "year": 2009, "month": "May", "volume": 168, "number": 1, "pages": "012008" }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 6, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "inspire": 814546, "adsabs": "2009JPhCS.168a2008C" } } }
