Unpaired electrons in this silicon powder are due to dangling bonds in the amorphous region of this intrinsically heterogeneous sample. Si-29 nuclei in the amorphous region become polarized by forced electron-nuclear spin flips driven by off-resonant microwave radiation while nuclei in the crystalline region are polarized by spin diffusion across crystalline boundaries. Hyperpolarized silicon microparticles have long T1 relaxation times and could be used as tracers for magnetic resonance imaging.", "revisions": [ { "version": "v2", "updated": "2008-03-27T20:51:53.000Z" } ], "analyses": { "subjects": [ "76.70.Fz", "03.67.Lx", "81.07.Bc", "82.56.-b" ], "keywords": [ "dynamic nuclear polarization", "silicon microparticles", "long t1 relaxation times", "forced electron-nuclear spin flips driven", "microcrystalline silicon powder" ], "tags": [ "journal article" ], "publication": { "publisher": "APS", "journal": "Physical Review Letters", "year": 2008, "month": "Mar", "volume": 100, "number": 12, "pages": 127601 }, "note": { "typesetting": "TeX", "pages": 4, "language": "en", "license": "arXiv", "status": "editable", "adsabs": "2008PhRvL.100l7601D" } } }
